Member Spotlight: Affordable Solar

Founded in 1998, Affordable Solar has grown to become one of the state’s most decorated solar installation companies in the state. The company has installed over 2,500 solar arrays in New Mexico and supplied systems to commercial, industrial, scientific, community, and residential customers.

As the business has grown, the demand for all scale types of solar energy have grown with it. The company has been able to create more than 150 careers and delivered over 20,000 PV systems to customers, ranging from residential to full-scale utility buyers.

In March 2019, Affordable Solar was contracted to design, install, own, and operate a carport solar array to be located at the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority’s (ABCWUA) San Juan Chama Water Treatment Plant through a Power Purchase Agreement. This is Affordable Solar’s second project with ABCWUA.

The structural support is comprised of a steel canopy providing both covered parking and mounting for the solar project. The carport solar array consists of 16,458 Boviet 380W PV modules and 95 SMA String inverters for a total output capacity of nearly 6.3 kilowatts. The engineering adjustments and the installation were complex due to underground utilities prevalent throughout the campus and the required location of the carports. To maximize plant capacity, panels were also installed on two water tanks.

The array was completed in the last quarter of 2020 and, to-date, is one of the largest solar carports in the United States. Over the life of the 30-year contract, the project will provide ABCWUA with millions of dollars in energy savings while enabling them to meet their renewable energy goals.

Affordable Solar also constructed a 1.3-megawatt solar farm at the Westside Campus of Central New Mexico Community College earlier this year. The project provides about 50 percent of the electricity needed to power the entire campus. An added benefit of the project is the hands-on experience it provides students in the Photovoltaic Solar Technology program. Many up-and-coming solar technicians will be working on solar projects exactly like this one for decades to come.

Renewable energy projects play a critical role in our state’s economy. By continuing to investment in clean energy, companies like Affordable Solar will continue to grow, create jobs, build a prosperous future for New Mexico.
